Frequently asked questions

What is implied volatility?
The annualized volatility an option's price implies. It is the market's forecast of how much the stock will move, expressed so that 30% IV means roughly a 1.9% expected daily move (30% ÷ √252).
What is IV rank?
Where today's 30-day implied volatility sits in its own one-year range: 0 at the 52-week low, 100 at the high. IV percentile is the share of sessions in that year with lower IV. OptionScout stores the daily ATM IV for every ticker here, so the rank is computed from a year of real sessions, not estimated.
What is a high IV?
It depends on the name: 15% is high for an index ETF and low for a small-cap biotech. Compare IV with the stock's own realized volatility (the premium column) and with its term structure rather than with a universal threshold.
Where do the numbers come from?
The live option chain for each ticker (eight nearest expirations) and 30 trading days of daily closes, refreshed every 15 minutes. Contracts with implausible IV are excluded and nothing is estimated.
