How the implied move is computed

Take the first expiration that captures the report (strictly after the date for after-close reports, on or after it for before-open reports), find the strike nearest the stock price with both a call and a put quoted, and add the two prices. That straddle, divided by the stock price, is the move the options market is charging for. Quotes are the live mid; outside market hours the day's close is used. The method is also on the about page; the glossary covers implied volatility and expected move.

Trading around it

Buying the straddle wins only if the stock moves more than the implied move; selling it collects the implied move and risks the surprise. Defined-risk versions (iron condors outside the range, debit spreads inside it) are the usual middle ground. How to trade earnings with options and IV crush after earnings cover the mechanics; the profit calculator prices any structure.

Not advice. Dates come from a third-party calendar and can change; the implied move is a market price, not a forecast.

Frequently asked questions

When is MSFT's next earnings date?
The date at the top of this page comes from the Finnhub earnings calendar and is refreshed about hourly. Companies confirm the exact date a few weeks ahead; until then the calendar shows an estimate, and this page says so when the time of day is not yet confirmed.
What is the expected move for MSFT earnings?
The market-implied earnings move is the price of the at-the-money straddle for the first expiration after the report, as a percentage of the stock price. It is what option buyers are paying for the move in either direction, not a prediction of direction or size.
How has MSFT done against estimates?
The earnings history table lists the last reported quarters with the consensus EPS estimate, the reported EPS and the surprise. A beat is reported EPS above the estimate; the size of past surprises is one gauge of how reliable the consensus is, though the stock's reaction depends on guidance as much as on the print.
Does the stock usually move more or less than the implied move?
Across many names and quarters the realised move is smaller than the implied move slightly more often than not, which is why selling premium into earnings is common and why it occasionally loses badly. Treat the implied move as the market's price for uncertainty.
